The Best Chilli Crab in Singapore in 2019
welcome back to food finders I'm Erica and today's episode is about chili crap even though I'm Singaporean I didn't eat chili crap that I was like what 17 everything's I ate it it was kind of life-changing and especially we deep-fried mines or like chilli crab is an iconic hot dish the origin of Singapore's sheetkraft actually starts from push carts along the coast of Singapore and then eventually we involved into the modern day version of chilli crab that we have today destination so here at Long Beach seafood at Stephens Road Long Beach is actually the creator of black pepper crab they even have a treatment for it Long Beach has like five outlets are crossing up as well so it's a really big majestic crap over here this is actually a Sri Lankan mud crab this is a 1.6 kg yes 1.6 kg which is a little bit more in the pricier side because it's actually $98 per kg but you actually get a the shelling service for those of you don't want to get your hands messy the restaurant here actually would be shell the entire crab for you we do no additional charge this only is a deep-fried Monto and it's on is the same one this is the biggest crap I've seen I've never eaten such a huge crab before look at the size of those pincers like wow size matters and you think spicy I do prefer if there is some amount of spice more chilly than tomato but this depends on like different restaurants and I was just out I think this much spice yeah all right spice it was by giving this one is like a little bit spice yeah I'm okay really every further sweeter Chili's supposed to be like chili crab not tomato crap we're gonna try out the the shelling service might as well use the service here yeah unless you really like the shelling own crabs doing good the meat is really thick dense firm like it worked out or something you can see that the meat actually fills out the shell and you can tell from the claw
it's very worn out that means like the crab has met the king food around a lot I mean it ate a lot so it's like a fat crap love it so it's a combination of good quality crabs with proper cooking techniques then you get this effect of having the meat just fall off from the shell I am gonna try the sauce at a monto crispy on the outside and in soft and fluffy on the inside I've died and went to heaven there's no good there's a nice contrast between the denseness of the gravy and then like the fluffiness and softness of the Monto my final verdict would be 4.5 it's like a little bit more in a pricier sigh it's hella price even a little crazy so that's why I kind of maybe like a full five one five but apart from the price I think it's really really delicious I would give this a five on five this is probably one of the best Gini crepps I've had it's a bit on the pricey side but you get what you pay for it let's go on and check out the other crap places we're here at Blue Lotus and Vandenberg ah the concept is a modern twist on Chinese cuisine they're trying to make Chinese cuisine sexy again so this is a signature dish which is a mellow chili crab it's one of their best sellers what makes it unique of course is the pomelo at it in unlike the traditional Killick rare where there's a lot of emphasis on tomahto a lot of it is on the herbs that they mix in and also the chilies that they use so they use the Carolina Reaper and the ghost pepper as well you can actually get three different levels of spiciness personally I am NOT a fan of pomelo it fell yeah I like bomb load I can see how the pablovich would help to even out give a bit more acidity give a bit more sweetness to the spicy kick of the chili pricing why it's about ninety dollars per kg this is 1kg live a spicy fun this sauce is very different from the usual king crab sauce it tastes more like a for Anakin curry can I keep these I did the sliced chili you lot thicker I've only had like one bite but it could be the weather or the chili but I am sweating already this is a key level one I think we are supposed to try it with the I'm alone oh it does go well I'm very surprised by itself might be a bit overwhelming but with the UM little dances are finite I don't like pomelo chili here it's not bad it's quite nice together it's pretty interesting I would say I've never tasted chili crap like this before definitely an interesting twist to it that's a lot more than like a refreshing feel to the sauce which is otherwise very heavy I actually thought I wouldn't like it ain't no the shelling service here do yourself like how like the meat has out from the shell good quality crabs prepared the right way when you tear like the lake you can achieve tear out the meat from the chamber itself very sweet flash it is good a very unique sauce definitely is like really bothering on do I call it chibi crab or like some bowel crap so now I'm gonna try it a deep-fried Manta with a chili crab sauce and because the sauce is not s as long as not as tacky as other places so it kind of doesn't stick to the bun as much the sauce on that like the mentor doesn't go together you know I like the Montalban by itself is a little bit firmer my final verdict for this would be like a 3.5 upon 5 but it's mostly because I prefer to have my to the cup sweet and it's really like my own personal preference the more you need a spicier it gets and I feel like my lips already becoming a little numb it's something new if you guys are bored with the typical chilli crab around Singapore I would highly recommend this I'd give this a 4 point 5 I think I've had the amount of chilli crab in Singapore and this is really unique for people who've had a lot of different key requests and they want to try something new so we're done with this place let's go to the next one we're here in Melbourne signature at Tanjong Pagar Plaza this is a family-run business for over 20 plus years they're packed almost every night in they sell about 70 to 80 kg of crab every day Melbourne is really popular then I try to walk in as either good 30 minutes at I one hour where you can actually also choose your crabs the selling price is $90 for every kg most of the times it's real and I think that's like kind of the gold standard for my crabs and Singapore already here we have a signature chilli crab this is 1 kilo us it looks really metal the way they presented like this stuff leaks at the body into your skull you know sauce wise you can see so much I think they added like a ton of eggs it does look a bit starchy though it's kind of jelly is gonna sweeter side isn't just the kind that you like yes but it's a little too sweet for me like really when I first tried it right immediately I would like walk Tomatoes so I'm not a huge fan of the texture of the gravy already because I feel like it's very close to like a jelly consistency I realized it too like poly that's huge it's gonna get messy man oh man it's really harsh else good thing is the shell comes off pretty clean here Wow you did a good job but it's a beautiful cloth so beautiful I like it yeah sure comes me which is very do see it is not thinking out crap meat you can see from the chloride it's a pretty clean cloth it's not scarred and like this guy's wanna be eating as much it's a slightly hollow but very fresh definitely here you actually do get to pick your own crap so you can try to look for that the flesh itself is very light flaky and it's not as firm it goes well with the mantle because of the tackiness I kind of sticks onto the mat already well that's like a game the outside is crispy skin and inside is filled up fluffy brick my final verdict 2/3 or 0.5 the gravy stand alone too overpowering in the tomato base like it meets the crab and the mantle to balance it out and also because of the jelly-like texture what he said too starchy for me a bit too sweet as well I prefer a bit more chili or spice the cracks are really fresh dill but this is very typical Singapore chilli crabs now I think a lot of places have crab that is like this I would give it like a tree cream on thigh probably we are done here let's claw our way to the next place so we're now here at RIT House means that Street they sell like crap here for $88 per kg they don't just get the normal you know Sri Lankan mud crab it can also get you the Scottish brown crab so this one here is 1.2 kg if you get the 1 point 8 kg and above they can actually split it to two different flavors they also pride themselves in using fresh produce the tomato puree for example is made from fresh tomatoes while this prep is engrave me the finger if you like mantle or you like drooling over your rights that's a hopeless amount of chilli crab sauce here for you to dip and I don't know wash your face in or whatever you want to do with it okay sauce that's kind of fancy bibs on oh wow that was a journey and I think today it was sweet tomato then suddenly sour and then for the tail and it became spicy this a lot more natural you don't get like the can bottle ketchup kind of flavors you know kind of spiciness I'm alright in sweet sour and spicy things very balanced in terms of flavor it's not only starchy as well Oh si si si si then stick to de-shell that's my pet peeve with eating crabs I think you can see like the meat kind of fills the shell I'm sorry are you okay oh okay mom thanks YUM this one is a bit more on the former site for the flesh but it's still very thick and juicy sausage wait I like the sauce steady most balanced sauce so far and Manito itself I am not knowing breath it's like so dense it's not fluffy I'm so sorry but this is a disappointing bite of mantle I prefer my mondo to be on the denser side but this one is just a big to dance right now where I actually have a hard time swallowing it so my final verdict is 4.5 because of the Monto and that's it because I feel that the price is really good I would give this 4.5 I'll give top marks for the crap they just need to improve their but hope you're not feeling too crabby because we still got more crap places to go to so we here it can keep seafood at Alexandra Road this has been around for about 40 years and all the recipes are passed down from generation to generation this one has been the original recipe ever since they focused a lot more on the homestyle dining so it's very casual is the epitome of a two-star restaurant that's done really well they were popular with a lot locals they've also won the between fleet here we have the 1kg crab their pricing is $80 per kg they use mix of crabs can be Sri Lankan and be fun Philippines depends on the supplier at the moment this one is a special kind of fluffy Monto and they only serve the steamed one eighth of a kilo is the cheapest that we've encountered throughout this entire day okay it's awesome how do you feel I know I said I like it sweeter but it's really lovely ketchup days it's automatic you can eat it I really like the texture I'm gonna go for the claw this time I feel pretty neutral about it I don't love it I don't hate it alright I definitely understand the appeal like what they're trying to say a homestyle dining where the whole family can enjoy it together it won't be spicy for the kids balls about pretty easy doesn't stick to the hell I'll say there's a very entry-level shitty problem if you never had chili crab before like this would be a good place to start it really soft I like little bread goes really well with the sauce I thought that a gravy was a bit too sweet and sour but with the steam mundo I think it's a passed point because with this together it balances out pretty well man-ho sauce combination I thinking IKEA has it the best I will give it a three point five one five there's really suitable for people who have never had three crab ever a bit too sweet for my liking same for me I'll give it a three point five as well because of personal preference on the end it was really too soon so for me and my taste buds but the plus point definitely was the steam mantle so we've come to the end of our journey my favorite chili crab hands-down has to be a long beach I know he's on every day anything because of the price but Hayes was quality I think it hit all the right spots for me I would say it's a tie between Red House and Long Beach the only reason why red hull was not my first pick a hit of Long Beach was probably because of the man told and that's all that we have for today's episode I hope you guys enjoy that's know
